The sysctl() system call can get or set the state of the system, the #FreeBSD kernel exposes the parameters for sysctl() as objects of a Management information Base (MIB).
sysctltui is a Text User Interface #sysctl #MIB explorer. It allow to view a parameter’s properties and get or set its value.

One of my favorite #Drupal modules, In Other Words, came out with a new major release.
It allows site builders to present lists naturally.
for example,
- apples
- bananas
- grapes
can be presented as
apples, bananas and grapes
or
apples, bananas, and grapes
or
apples, bananas & grapes
sequential items (like days) can be presented as things like
Monday through Thursday and Saturday

#RTFM is great and all but when a project's #docs are riddled with incorrect / outdated config field names and other stuff, it's a huge waste of time.
Please check the accuracy of your docs! Do a fresh install of your project and follow your own steps and copy paste your own example configs if you can.
Remember that many users will not file an issue, and simply assume your project is hopeless, especially if it doesn't have a big following.
Huge congratulations to Brian Harvey and Dan Garcia on receiving the 2024 ACM Service Award!
Together with Jens Mönig @moenig they laid the foundation for Snap!, the visual programming language that powers TurtleStitch. Their work has enabled creative coding and learning experiences around the world—and we’re proud to build on it!

#EndOf10 "The Open Source alternative to forced obsolescence"
https://opensource.org/blog/end-of-10-the-open-source-alternative-to-forced-obsolescence
> Open Source isn’t just about code. It’s about community, sustainability, and autonomy. The “End of 10” campaign is a chance to show the world how powerful those values can be.
> We invite everyone—users, developers, educators, and advocates—to be part of this movement. Because the end of Windows 10 isn’t the end of the road. It’s a new beginning.

By using #foss video editors I gave up color grading that was capable of believable film emulation (via Resolve and its third party plugins).
But it's even more disturbing that none of these foss apps support 10bit h.264/5. Let alone Raw. This kind of makes them useless to me, as most of my cameras record as such. In fact, most new non-phone cameras record as such by default.

Bonjour, c/opensource@lemmy.ml
!
Framasoft (that’s us!) is a small French non-profit (10 employees + 25 volunteers), that has been promoting Free-Libre software and its culture to a French-speaking audience for 20+ years.
We strongly believe that Free-Libre software is one of the essential tools for achieving a Free-Libre society. That is why we maintain and contribute to lots of projects that aim to empower people to get more freedom in their digital lives.
Among those tools are:
Framasoft is funded by donations (94% of our 2024 budget), mainly grassroots donations (75% of the 2024 budget). As we mainly communicate in French, the overwhelming majority of our donations comes from the French-speaking audience. You can help us through joinpeertube.org/contribute.
In the English-speaking community, we are mostly known for developing PeerTube, a self-hosted video and live-streaming free/libre platform, which has become the main alternative to Big Tech’s video platforms.
From a student project to a software with international reach, our video platform solution is now, seven years later, used and acknowledged by many institutions!
The last major version of PeerTube, v7, has been released at the end of 2024, along with the first version of the official mobile app, available on both Android (Play Store, F-Droid) and iOS.
Now that the PeerTube platform has matured significantly over successive versions, we believe that the way to enable even more people to use PeerTube is to improve the mobile app so that it can be carried around in people’s pockets.
Last month, we have published the roadmap for the project. This week, we also launched our new crowdfunding campaign which focuses on our mobile app. We want to give you the opportunity through this AMA to give us feedback on the product and the project and discuss the crowdfunding campaign and our next steps!
If you have any questions, please ask them below (and upvote those you want us to answer first).
We will answer them to the best of our abilities with the /u/Framasoft
account, from May. 28th 2025 5pm CET (11 am EST) until we are too tired ;).
A #reboot is a solution to many tech problems. But if you are on #Linux, did you know you need to reboot only if your kernel has changed? Otherwise you can do a "soft reboot" and get the same thing. You need to kill the init process and make it respawn. It varies from distro to distro but on #systemd ones, you can do systemctl soft-reboot
and it'll do the job for you.
Also if you have problem with your graphical shell, you can simply restart your graphical stuff. Not even a soft reboot is needed. For instance if your display manager is lightdm like me, simply do systemctl restart lightdm
.
I think this applies to other #unixlike operating systems with the similar kernel and system architecture as Linux. Maybe #BSD people can share their experience?

The End (of Windows 10) is nigh!
On 14 October, #Microsoft will end support for #Win10.
This will turn hundreds of millions of computers that cannot upgrade to #Win11 into security risks and #eWaste.
Yours may be one of them!
But what if you could make your current one fast and secure again?

@libreoffice
#LibreOffice #foss #OpenSource
I love #Libreoffice because it gives you the choice of which interface to use. Because you never have the feeling that someone is constantly looking over your shoulder. And because ODF documents are much more efficient than Microsoft files.
I have been using #Libreoffice for many years. I bought my first version in Munich, when it was still StarOffice version 5.2. That was quite a long time ago.
One of the side effects of making a drop-in replacement for `ldns` in #rustlang is finding and fixing bugs in the original, along the way. #DNS #OpenSource https://github.com/NLnetLabs/ldns/issues/277
In my presentation on our #DNSSEC signer Nameshed at the CENTR Jamboree, I emphasized the cross-pollination of experience and code between teams and projects, allowing us to make fast progress with battle tested code.
So when @terts opened the Nameshed #DNS project, he came across his ‘roto’ code - the scripting language he developed for our #BGP engine Rotonda. #OpenSource #rustlang

This is shocking! MinIO removed the admin UI from the open-source version in a PR that effectively removes 110K lines.
https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/1kva3pw/avoid_minio_developers_introduce_trojan_horse/
Over the last couple of months, I deployed three Kubernetes clusters with MinIO storage clusters. I don't depend on the admin UI, but this project was clearly open-sourced for the wrong reasons. I guess it's time to replace it.
Firefox 139 is now available with New Tab customisation, faster uploads (in some scenarios), AI previews, and dev-focused features. The lightest update in a while, but still worth updating to!

Could Linux replace Microsoft at university?
I spoke up in a meeting about the push for open-source tools and told them that, if they’re serious, it’s time to drop Microsoft entirely. I suggested switching to Linux instead, and surprisingly, the manager was all for it! Fingers crossed that this change might actually be coming.
